In a directive dated 26 November 1944, Lieutenant-General James H. Doolittle, then Commanding General, Eighth Air Force, requested a report of the development of the Eighth Air Force for the Commanding General, Army Air Forces and to be used as a background for tactical study by the Air Force Tactical School. This report, "Eighth Air Force- Tactical Development- August 1942 - May 1945" was prepared under the direction of Major General Orvil A. Anderson, former Deputy Commander for Operations, Eighth Air Force. It is believed that the report is sound in its statements and conclusions, and that it offers valuable information to anyone reviewing the combat activities of the Eighth Air Force during the air war against Germany. Chapters include: the development of basic bomber and fighter formations and procedures; bombing; targets; and the air war on the Western Front, 1942-1945. Appendix A and B include development of the organization and major modifications to aircraft and equipment.
