Historic Fort Smith, Arkansas was an important Pre- Civil War Frontier Post and a refuge for the Freedmen during the War. Postwar it served to protect settlers and Indians from outlaw bands in Western Arkansas and the IndianTerritory. An Original US Army Ordnance Invoice for paint brushes issued to Captain James B Mulligan, 19th US Infantry by Captain W.J. Lyster at Fort Smith, Ark, January 16, 1867. The 1p 8 x 11\" ptd/ink invoice bears the Ordnance Dept logo on the reverse and is ink signed by Captain Lyster. Comes w service info- Captain Lyster served w the 2nd Michigan during the War, was cited for conspicuous gallantry at The Battles of Chickamauga and Atlanta, and remained in the 19th Infantry postwar, including Command of Fort Larned, Kansas and Forts Randall and Sydney.
