The American Vanadium Company was a chemicaland metallurgical plant used to smelt crude oremined at the Vanadium Corporation's deposit inMina Ragra, Peru to produce ferro-vanadium. TheVanadium Corporation of America was a commercialproducer of vanadium, a transition metal and astrengthening additive for steel. The company wasfounded in 1906 by Joseph M. Flannery and washeadquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Thecompany operated several vanadium mines inmultiple countries, including Peru. By 1914, 75percent of the world's vanadium ore productioncame from the American vanadium mine in MinasRagra, Peru. In August 1916, James J. Flannerysold the company but remained chairman of the board.The American Vanadium Company is known asthe Vanadium Corporation of America today.
